A hotel and restaurant in the seized city of Donetsk were shelled by Ukrainian forces on Wednesday, inflicting injuries on a former Russian deputy prime minister and a Kremlin-backed figure.
Dmitry Rogozin, a former deputy prime minister of Russia who now commands a volunteer group supporting Kremlin-aligned forces in Ukraine, was eating a business lunch with several colleagues when the establishment came under fire from high-precision weapons.
The strike, which is thought to have been carried out by a Caesar 155-millimeter self-propelled howitzer artillery system that France provided to Ukrainian forces, left Rogozin with a shoulder blade injury.
The 59-year-old Putin crony also allegedly sustained shrapnel wounds to the head, buttocks and left hip, the news outlet Baza reported on its Telegram channel.
He was transported to a hospital in the Russian city of Rostov-na-donu and is expected to survive.

According to Vitaly Khotsenko’s press secretary, the attack on the Shesh-Besh restaurant resulted in at least one death and wounds for the leader of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic.
Pictures of the shelling’s gruesome aftermath showed a blood-soaked carpet, white tablecloths stained with blood, and a sizable portion of the dining room wall missing.
Donetsk is located in the industrial Donbas area, which has witnessed some of the 10-month conflict’s most intense fighting. Since 2014, the city has been under the control of pro-Moscow authorities.
Rogozin hinted that the Ukrainian troops had responded to a tip in a post on his personal Telegram channel on Thursday.
